Previously people thought that they could dump the waste from industry and energy production into the sea and air and the world would disperse the particles far and wide and clean itself. This worked ok while there was not too many people and not too many industrial processes.

Now however we are producing more waste than nature can deal with. Perhaps it is time to see the world as a series of interrelated systems and work with them instead of against them. Energy flows from the Sun through the Earth’s systems and back out into space.

There are natural carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and water cycles operating on the Earth and it is necessary to understand these cycles and flows to predict what effect our activities will have on the world environment.
